Viking Challenge

The Mystics have spoken, there is land to the west, you need only get in your long boats and find it. May the gods give you fair winds and be the first to find far away lands…and welcome to the Viking Challenge.

The Viking Challenge is an interactive online race. Teams of four will row their longboat virtually over 3,874,189 meters from Norway to Newfoundland, or can opt to row the shorter distance of 2,437,753 meters from Reykjavik to Newfoundland. Teams will be asked (but not required!) to conduct legs of their race over Google Meetings, proudly displaying their team number, colors, or even logo.

The Viking Challenge will span 122 days from March 1st to June 30th. Rowers can row any time during the competition period—no need to schedule ahead!

The Viking Challenge will award all rowers who complete their row in 122 days a medal. The top three teams will receive additional recognition.

The Viking Challenge is due to start on March 1st at 12PM Boston time.

Teams can either be assembled by Border Rowers or they can be set up on their own. A survey will go out for potential rowers with an assessment of their abilities. Scores will be self ranked on a scale of 1-3, with a three being a highly motivated rower and a 1 more of casual rower.

  • 1: Casual Rower, in it for the fun of it

  • 2: Somewhat competitive, I will hold my own

  • 3: Superglue me to the seat, I am in it to win it
